The General Manufacturing And Metal Workers Union

The General Manufacturing And Metal Workers Union was duly registered under the Trade Union Ordinance, 1941 by the Registrar of Trade Unions with the name General Metal And Metal Fabrication Workers Union (GEMM) of Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL). GEMM was the 20th registered Trade Union amongst over a hundred (100) registered Trade Unions in Ghana.

At an extraordinary Delegates Conference on 14th July,2004 of the Union at Tema the name of the Union was changed to General Manufacturing And Metal Workers Union with the same acronym as GEMM and gazette.

The Union at the beginning of its activities had it offices at Tema by the General Hospital Road Community 10, by dint of hard work on 7th February, 2007 moved the head office to Accra, Palma House, 16 Nii Tetteh Wuluku Road, Adabraka – Accra. With the Digital Address GA-075-2183. This is to allow for close proximity to Labour related institutions in Ghana.

The Gemm Union is affiliated to the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) which is the second labour center in Ghana, which has a representative on the National Tripartite Committee and also a member of Organized Labour. Ghana Federation of Labour is an affiliate of International Trades Union Confederation (Africa Region).

The General Manufacturing And Metal Workers Union has working relationship with other Pan African Trade Union Organizations and other Global Trade Union Federations for union exposures, and always share other countries Trade Union experiences, to maintain ILO Standards and participate in educational programs and seminars organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

On the National scene, Gemm activities cut across the Regions of Ghana, the following companies have Gemm members participating in Trade Union activities;
